I don’t know about you, but seeing other people’s living spaces is like looking into their soul. A home can say so much about a person’s personality and interests and as they tend to change over the years, I decided to start a series on this blog that gives me the chance to capture and explore different living spaces, specifically bedrooms: Where I live. 

Where I live is a series dedicated to peeking into the personal spaces of myself and the people around me. In it, I hope to highlight that each and every room comes with its own personality and quirks that reflect those of its owner.

First stop in this series: my old room at uni. I stayed there for the past year and although it took some getting used to (as can be read here), it gradually started to feel like a place I could temporarily call my home. Now that I have moved out, I thought it would be the perfect time to give you a little look into where I created the majority of my content this year.

LIVING SPACE

When I thought about what areas best mirrored my personality, I gravitated straight towards my desk area. This is the place I did everything – assignments, studying, creating content for this blog, writing in my journal. I am a very visual person and love having lots of photos around me, as I feel more inspired when a space is filled with the things I love and cherish.

I also adjusted pixie lights around my pin board and loved switching them on when it was dark outside. Pixie lights instantly make everything feel much more homey.

One thing I despise about moving into a new place are the bare walls. If the majority of my walls are empty, I feel like something is missing, so I always have spare photographs, polaroid pictures, postcards, cut outs (really anything you can think of to put on a wall) on hand to personalize my walls. I wasn’t allowed to put nails in my wall, so I resorted to sticky tac.

This was probably my favourite thing about this tiny apartment – my photo wall next to my huge ass window. In the mornings, the light would hit that wall just right and it would always be a heart-warming sight to wake up to. It also was a huge factor in making me feel at home, as I could always see so many familiar faces on it.

Fun fact about me: I even keep empty tea bag packaging and stick them on my walls too – especially if it’s one of my favourite teas!

My bed was a tricky area. It had two shelves built into the wall, which made it hard for me to decorate. What I ended up doing was taking your typical packaging string and hanging some pictures up. I used sellotape sticky tac to hold the string up.

My best friend gifted me two mini canvasses that she painted herself, which I knew I wanted to display. As I couldn’t hang them up on the wall, I decided to rest them against the upper shelf and actually quite liked them there.

Plants have this stunning effect of instantly transforming any space into a lively one. I feel like they brighten the place up and add to a home like decor or furniture. I actually managed to keep this plant alive for a year (god knows how), normally they last me a couple of months and then they die. I can be such a bad plant mother *sigh*

As you will have probably noticed by now, pixie lights are a reoccurring theme!

When I closed my blinds completely it had this stunning effect in the morning. Light would slip through the cracks of my blinds, making for a visual pattern. This is something I really came to enjoy every morning.

The light pattern from above would also transfer to my walls.

And that’s a wrap with the first part of Where I live! I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed making it. Part two will be my room at home, the space I have been constantly adding to for years now. I am really excited for you to see!

  2. Totally agree,a house or a room can really be the mirror of the soul of his inhabitant.i personally always peek at bathrooms….people’s bathroom usually gives me the idea of them

  3. This is a great idea for a post series! I think bedrooms tell so much about a person’s personality and who they are. I like how you have decorated all your walls with the photos and pictures. It reminds me that I keep needing to get my photos developed. I hate that I have them all saved on my phone and laptop, and not in a photo album or hung in my room. xx

  6. I love your uni room! Mine is very similar to yours where it is painted white and I have decorated it with photos and pictures. I would say for cheap room décor, try to make as much of it yourself as possible and also look in charity shops because they often have good quality furniture for cheaper prices. xx

  8. Woooow, Fiona I love this!! Like you, I love getting to see someone’s space, it allows me to get to learn so much about them, that’s why I take so much pride in my own space – I want to make it as ‘me’ as possible. I loved this idea .xx
