Monthly Music: june 19

You guys. I am SO. FREAKING. EXCITED for this Monthly Music feature! *claps hands enthusiastically* Ok? Ok.

In terms of discovering new songs, June was epic. I found so many gems in the short span of a month that I had to go through three rounds of shortening the selection down below.

Overall, my June playlist ended up having 85 songs, which is, well, a ton of music. *breathes in*

One could definitely say that I am in love. In love with music, in love with music artists, in love with life. Music has such a unique way of speaking to us, connecting with us, making us feel. I often describe the feeling I get with some songs as otherworldly for that precise reason. It can create an atmosphere like no other medium, one where the listener can fully immerse themselves into a space where time doesn’t exist. Only music. *breathes out*

If I had to describe this month’s playlist, I’d call it “a mix of old and new”. I definitely jumped back and forth between decades quite a lot with this selection of songs.

*By clicking on the song titles in blue, you will be redirected to the YouTube video of the given song (so that you can have a little listen as well). All songs are available on Spotify, the full playlist is embedded at the end of this post.

Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles

Strawberry Fields Forever was stuck in my head for DAYS at a time. L, a friend I study with, was probably annoyed at the amount of times I would just randomly burst out into song and scream “STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER”.

The Beatles are an absolute music-staple of mine, where I get all annoying and whiney and become the cliche “I wish I was born in another era” girl.

Got To Get You Into My Life by The Beatles

Got To Get You Into My Life is one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite albums from one of my favourite bands. I just….. I love The Beatles so, so, sooooooooooo much.

I was alone, I took a ride

I didn’t know what I would find there

Another road where maybe I could see another kind of mind there

Then suddenly I see you

Did I tell you I need you

every single day

Queen Persephone by Dirty Art Club

I stumbled across this song by chance on YouTube and was immediately blown away. Lately, I have definitely been feeling songs that are a little more on the “trippy” side (if you like that vibe too, then definitely check out The Voidz as well).

Queen Persephone is SUCH an underrated song – and after discovering it, I did a little research on Dirty Art Club and guess what? Such an unknown artist. His songs have a wonderfully weird quality to them, which are so compelling and immersive.

This definitely isn’t the last time I will be listening to Dirty Art Club :’)

The Chain by Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac is an artist I have loved for the longest time but somehow I go through phases where I forget they exist, then rediscover them and get super mad at myself for not doing so sooner. It’s a cycle I have come to love and hate at the same time.

0:54 gives me the chills. And then I do some excessive head banging. AND THAT BASS LINE IS EVERYTHING (3:00). The emotion in this song is incredible. Goosebumps every. damn.time. I hate to break it to you, but if you don’t know this song, then you are seriously missing out on pure ART.

I DON’T LOVE YOU ANYMORE by Tyler, The Creator

I have two words for you: PRODUCTION VALUE. This song is so well-produced, I doubt anyone could say otherwise. The voice that always interjects with “I don’t love you anymore” is absolutely amazing and really sets the tone of the song. When I first heard it, my first thoughts were “this sounds like Tyler”.

In terms of meaning, this song hits close to home – the struggle of moving on is one all of us go through at one point or another in our lives.

So I won’t walk around with my head down like I got beat up

Um, you do you, I’ll do me, I’ll just choke the piece up

I ain’t tryna keep up, because

I don’t love you anymore

>I recently wrote a full album dissection/discussion/interpretation/fangirl moment about IGOR which you can read HERE if you’re interested.

still feel. by half alive

One of my best friends, K, had been telling me for ages to check out the trio half alive. So when I finally did, I could have kicked myself for not doing so sooner. When she said they were “funky”, she was definitely spot on.

still feel. is definitely an absolute BANGER of a song. Whenever I listen to it, I can’t help but do these really weird dance/head/hand movements which nobody has witnessed yet (thank god). But they may very soon come to light, as half alive is coming to Vienna this autumn! I AM SO PUMPED. AAAHHHHHHH.

If you like a pop / funky / sing along / dance along / happy / upbeat / a little dramatic SOUND, then you should definitely check out their other songs as well.
