Monthly Music: February 19

February, you have been immensely good to me.

Not only is this one of my favourite playlists ever, so much so that I had a lot of trouble narrowing it down to a few of my favourites, but the month itself has been all about HOME for me.

Coming back from my semester abroad and settling back into normal, mundane life again definitely defined my music taste a ton. On my first day back home, I started to clean out my room and get rid of things that I didn’t need anymore. (hint: post about this in the works)

I don’t know about you, but I need a banging playlist running in the background whenever I am tidying up or sorting through my stuff. So feel free to regard the following playlist as not only my monthly favourites, but also songs to sort your life (room) out.

?What are some songs that you listen to when you tidy up?

*As always, the links in blue will redirect you to the YouTube video of the given song. All songs are available on Spotify, the full playlist (if you just can’t get enough) is linked at the very end of this post.

Daisy by Pond

Pond is an extremely underrated band which I have come to love deeply in the last few months. The lead singer’s voice is often compared to David Bowie’s and I can definitely see why – they definitely take inspiration from legends like Bowie, Mercury, etc.

Daisy evokes carefree feelings, the feeling of being alive and happy. THIS is the type of music that I need more of, this is the music that makes me forget how much badly produced music is rising to the top of the charts nowadays. This definitely isn’t the last time you will be hearing of Pond.

Passionfruit by Benny Sings

If I had to describe Benny Sings, I would say he’s a mixture of Mac DeMarco and Rex Orange County. So if you like any of the two, you’re bound to fall in love with Benny Sings.

Passionfruit is a song I would first and foremost label as ‘cute and quirky’. It elates my mood every time I listen to it. It is actually a remake of Drake’s song by the same title. The lyrics were kept but the instrumentals were altered completely.

I love Drake, I love Benny Sings and I love both versions of Passionfruit.

I’ll Come Too by James Blake

James Blake has truly, totally, fully captured my heart this month. I loved him long before, but there’s something about his new album, Assume Form, that made me fall in love even more with this beautiful, talented soul.

I’ll Come Too is probably one of the “happiest” songs James has ever produced; a comment under the YouTube video summed it up perfectly: “there’s something so happily melancholic about James Blake. It’s beautiful”.

He actually used a sample by Bruno Nicolai for this song: La Contessa, Incontro which is famous for being in the soundtrack of Motion Picture’s “Love Birds” from 1969.

I’m gonna say what I need

If it’s the last thing I do

I do, I do, I do

I’m in that kind of mood

Drift by Choker

Choker is a very talented guy that I have been following for a while now. There’s a lot of Internet discussion on the fact that he is often compared to Frank Ocean and accused of “stealing his style”.

Drift in particular sounds like it was definitely inspired by Frank but Choker himself is not a copy of Frank – he is another artist. As a huge fan of Frank Ocean, I love the wave of new, creative artists that has come out of his music, influenced and inspired by Frank. More power to them! (Daniel Caesar is definitely another name I would add to that list)

This song is very laid-back and “chill” as the kids say these days but does not come without its fast-paced verses. Choker is on the road to greatness, I can feel it.

SPECIAL SHOUTOUT GOES TO:

Tell Me by Priya Fancis

A blog favourite, Priya Francis, has just released her new single called Tell Me and let me tell YOU: this song is absolutely beautiful. Priya is so talented, her voice so soft and smooth – if you haven’t listened to it yet, click here.

Also, I recently got the chance to interview Priya for The Person Behind series, so if you want some background info about the song and Priya herself, check it out here.

    1. Then you have a good taste in guys who have good taste in music hahaha! I freaking love James Blake so much, he’s such a visionary and behind so many popular songs out there at the moment, simply working behind the scenes. Oh my god I’m so jealous you got to see Rex!! It must have been an amazing experience. Thank you thank you, I love it too tbh xx

    1. Same, music makes SUCH a difference. I once read that it can actually make you 30% more productive – I don’t know if it’s true, but it doesn’t change the fact that having music on motivates me ten times more than if I tidy (or do anything really) in silence. And if you find out what it’s called, let me know, maybe it’s one I’ve never heard before! xx

  3. I have heard so much about Billie Ellish and her music – I should really check her out! My favourite song from the past month has probably been London by Sarah Close. xx
