Hello friends of the Internet,
if there’s one thing I’m never late for, then it’s my Monthly Music posts. My May playlist is a mix of things I love – dreamy, rock, indie, alternative, hip hop and much, much more (truthfully, I’m starting to get confused by all of the genres, sub genres and sub sub genres).
There have been some incredible album releases as of late, ones I have been anticipating for so long, it’s hard to believe they’re actually a reality.
What have you been listening to as of late? Any new releases that you have absolutely fallen in love with? Tell meeeeee (please)
If you click on the song titles in blue, you will be redirected to the YouTube video of the given song.
All songs are available on Spotify, you can find the full playlist at the end of this post.

Broken Boy by Cage The Elephant
WHAT AN OPENER. Jesus. The beginning hit me in the gut and I was like DO IT AGAIN. This song just pumps me up so much, I…. I can’t. Cage The Elephant brings me back to my 16 year old self, listening to so much music on blast that I’m surprised my ears still work.
Broken Boy is the first song of their new album, Social Cues, I listened to and honestly, after listening to a few seconds of it, I was SOLD. Though they have been going in a different direction sound-wise as of late, Broken Boy is the perfect transition from old to new. It brings you back but manages to throw in some new elements. I mean….
Tell me why I’m forced to live in this skin
Tell me why I’m forced to live in this skin
I’m an alien
Just an alien
Borderline by Tame Impala
Would this even be one of my playlists if I didn’t include Tame Impala? I don’t think so. Kevin Parker has to be one of the most talented names in the music industry right now. To truly highlight how amazing this song is, let me quote some of my favorite comments under this song on YouTube:
‘The part when Kevin says “gets me every time” literally gets me every time‘
‘There isn’t a more perfect vibe than Tame Impala‘
‘He’s able to mix his vocals with the background music so well.‘
‘Another day im glad im living in the same era as this genius‘
FACE by BROCKHAMPTON
I admire BROCKHAMPTON for so many reasons, one of them being their versatility. FACE is filled with love, compassion and fragility. Compare that with some of their other songs and you will be shocked…. and hopefully blown away. Joba, the guy who sings the hook has such an angelic voice and really carries the whole track.
This song is perfect for those lazy sunny days outside, a slight breeze in your hair.
…Tell me what you’re waiting for
I just wanna love you…
ALBUMS
IGOR by Tyler, The Creator
YES YES YES. Tyler had been teasing his new album for so long, it felt like Christmas when it first dropped. Long-time readers on this platform will know that I am a total, absolute, cRaZy Tyler, The Creator fan. I have been listening to him since Cherry Bomb, fell completely in love with his evolved style in Flower Boy and was anticipating the release of IGOR for months.
IGOR reminds me of elements of his older music mixed with the sound he first created with Flower Boy. Every time he releases a new album, I am absolutely dumbfounded by the growth depicted in each and every song and the way he takes us on a journey – his journey. The features on IGOR are amazing and so well chosen; my favourites include Solange, Santigold, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.
Social Cues by Cage The Elephant
Another absolute BANGER of an album. Cage The Elephant has been one of my favourites for years and when they released this beauty, my heart stopped for a moment. In my April playlist I mentioned one of their songs, Night Running, which is also a part of this album. Other favourites include Broken Boy, Social Cues, Black Madonna, House of Glass, Dance Dance, What I’m Becoming and Goodbye.
Sound-wise, it’s definitely not what they used to be, and I mean this in the best way possible. I am a big fan of artists and their music evolving over time, in a way, I think it’s natural. In my opinion, I think an artist simply can’t have the same sound their whole career. Tastes change; let them explore, experiment and grow from it. This album in particular caused a huge stur in Cage The Elephant’s fan base, as many are not entirely sure they like the new direction they’re heading in. (I for one am DIGGING IT)
Drink to you – Jonas Blue ft. Zak Abel is a song that is on repeat for quite sometime now for me. You can give it a shot 🙂
